At the end of a long winter, the warm winds of spring start most boat owners itching to get back on the water. Towboat operators are also gearing up for those early-season calls to haul back boats that went out unprepared after months of improper storage. To avoid this, there are a number of important steps to take before that initial annual launch. The first item on the list is to verify you have up-to-date OC boat insurance. After that, you will want to check the important systems, equipment, and functions to ensure everything is in good working order and prepared for a new season on the water.
Systems Check
Prior to taking your boat out for its first annual run, be sure to conduct an oil change, including filter change and add an anti-corrosive agent. Also, perform an outdrive inspection, refill the cooling system, check water pumps and thermostats, and review your onboard electronics to ensure everything is operational.
The best practice in de-winterizing your boat is to drain the cooling system before the winter months and to fill the fuel tank with stabilizer fluid. This helps prevent moisture buildup during the colder months when the boat is in storage. To de-winterize, carefully check the fuel line for cracks, which can easily occur in the rubber during the winter. You will want a fresh fuel filter, and if your tank has gas in it that did not have a preservative added, you will need to drain it.
Cable, Hose, and Belt Check
Cables and hoses on boats endure a great deal of wear and tear over the years, especially rubber hoses that break down in sunlight and low temps. All cables and hoses, particularly fuel and coolant hoses, should be tight and secure. Carefully check all belts by pressing on them; a lot of give indicates a replacement is needed. Another sign of a worn belt is the presence of soot near the pulleys.
Exterior and Gear Check
The dewinterizing process is a good time to give the exterior of the boat a good cleaning and even a new paint job if one is needed. Even though the bottom of the boat is the part that is least visible, it’s important to keep it clean and painted with anti-fouling paint to avoid rot. Sand and scrape the bottom of the vessel, wipe it down, and apply paint as needed.
Don’t overlook your safety gear. All equipment, such as lights, horns, flares, and flotation devices, must be in working condition. Check expiration dates on fire extinguishers and replace them as needed.
Safety during the boating season depends greatly on proper spring preparation. Ensure your OC boat insurance is current and pay close attention to the de-winterizing process. Once your boat is protected and ready to go, you will have peace of mind and can safely enjoy another season out on the water!
