Before You Ride Your Jet Ski in the Ocean

Taking a jet ski in the ocean can be an exhilarating experience and give you fun and excitement that you will never forget. Although 35 miles per hour does not sound particularly fast, when you experience that speed on an open expanse of water without an enclosure to protect you, it sure feels like you’re flying.

Riding a Jet Ski in the Ocean: The Details

While jet skis are remarkably stable and safe, there are still some essential things to remember when you take one out in the ocean.

Know the Law

The laws governing jet skis will vary based on your location. Most locations will require the use of a personal floatation device. Adult supervision is also usually needed to enable children ages 12 to 15 to operate a motor-powered vessel. Some areas require a boating license to operate a jet ski, and many require successful completion of a water safety course. If you are on the water in Mexico, watercraft insurance is also an important consideration.

Know Your Area

Exploring is great fun, but you should avoid riding into an unknown area or venturing too far. If you choose to go beyond the easily visible immediate area, ensure you have checked your gas tank, consulted a map, and brought a phone or other form of emergency communication with you. Don’t take unnecessary risks, even if you have Mexico watercraft insurance. Ensure you are aware of the condition of the nearby shore in case you need to beach your jet ski. Watch out for crowds, rocky shorelines, or areas with choppy water or strong undertows.

Bring the Essentials

Jet skis have limited storage available, but some specific items are helpful to bring with you, in addition to the life jacket:

  • A signaling device, such as a whistle
  • A map or GPS device
  • Appropriate water-specific clothing. Some people find that water shoes and gloves are helpful for comfort and for gripping the throttle
  • Proper licensing and documentation
  • A cell phone in a waterproof case
  • A multipurpose knife in case the jet ski gets caught in netting, seaweed, or debris
  • Boat insurance required in Mexico

Prepare for Marine Life

You are almost guaranteed to see marine life while out in the ocean. Fish, manatees, rays, sharks, turtles, and whales live where you’re playing. It’s prevalent for dolphins to ride along in the wake of jet skis. Keep your eyes open and alert for sea creatures, your safety, and theirs. If you encounter an animal, stay calm and try to move out of its way. Don’t try to attract attention from marine animals, as you don’t want to provoke a negative interaction or even an attack. Never disembark your jet ski in an attempt to touch an animal in the ocean. Remember, they are wild animals; you cannot predict how they will react, and your presence can put them in danger.

It’s easy to love riding a jet ski. If you prepare well for your trip, you’ll safely enjoy the thrill of the open ocean.
