The popularity of recreational boating has increased significantly over the past year, as people turned to the water as a form of social distancing. Unfortunately, the increased number of boats also means an increased number of accidents. In 2020, there were 5,265 accidents involving 767 deaths, 3,191 injuries and $62.5 million in property damage, which is why OC boat insurance is such a critical part of responsible ownership.
Most people envision storms or giant waves causing vessels to wreck on the high seas, but the truth is that boaters in the U.S. are 10 times more likely to die in a body of still water than on the high seas. In fact, the U.S. Coast Guard’s annual report shows that human error accounts for 75% of all boating accidents, suggesting that the leading cause of boat related deaths is complacency. Here are some important tips to ensure proper care is taken for safe recreational boating:
Always Wear Life Jackets
In 75% of boating fatalities, the victims drowned. Of those drowning victims, 86% were not wearing a life jacket. Many people feel that life jackets are only necessary in unusual circumstances or hazardous conditions, but accidents can occur without warning and a life jacket does not help if you’re not wearing it.
Get Proper Training
Participating in sufficiently detailed safety training is a critical factor in responsible boat ownership. Insufficient operator training was a major factor in 77% of boating fatalities. In 2020, 612 accidents with 56 deaths and 343 injuries were attributed to the lack of experience of the operator.
Keep a Proper Lookout
Responsible boat operation includes not only maintaining vigilance on the part of the driver, but also designating a lookout to spot dangers that the operator might miss. This is a critical step that many people fail to take, especially when conditions seem favorable. However, a lookout is always a necessity, even when visibility is good and weather is fair.
Avoid Alcohol Use
For many, alcohol consumption goes hand in hand with spending a day on the water, but boat operators and passengers are more likely to behave recklessly or become distracted when drinking. Alcohol use is the greatest cause of fatal boating accidents, contributing to 296 accidents, 115 deaths, and 260 injuries in 2020.
Proper Maintenance
Responsible boat ownership includes maintaining the vessel and a policy such as OC boat insurance. Ensuring the mechanical systems and physical structure of the boat are in good working order is critical for avoiding accidents
Pay Attention to the Weather
Statistically, most boating accidents occur in good weather, but you should still avoid the water when the conditions are poor. Watch the local marine forecasts and keep an eye on the skies for changes.
Most boating accidents are avoidable. When owners take care to maintain the vessel and behave responsibly and cautiously while on the water, recreational boating can be a safe and enjoyable activity.
